Abstract:
Most new technologies foster improved product performance. These “sustaining technologies” improve the performance of established products in historically valuable ways. Occasionally, “disruptive technologies” also emerge. Certain disruptions may occur because the pace of technological progress in product development frequently exceeds the rate of performance improvement that mainstream consumers demand. In this article, Alessandro Zago analyzes whether certain nanotechnologies will be disruptive. Specifically, he analyzes the potential disruptive and sustaining effects of (1) chip thermal management nanotechnology on the mobile phones market and refrigeration sector; and (2) nanotechnological progress in the value chain of the textile industry.
