Nanotech and the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: The Birth of a Patent Class
Volume 2, Issue 3
Authors:
Blaise Mouttet
Abstract:
Last year, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (“PTO”) took the first steps in establishing a special area for nanotechnology by creating class 977/Dig.1. Further steps have since been underway to refine this class so that inventors, patent attorneys, patent examiners and the public in general may be provided with a resource to obtain data on how the patent landscape regarding nanotechnology is developing. In this article, Blaise Mouttet, a recently retired U.S. patent examiner who worked on the project, gives an inside view on the initial steps taken in the formation of the first U.S. patent class devoted to nanotechnology.
