Many nanotechnology start-ups have followed a traditional approach of seeking private equity investment for seed capital. Given the cautious nature of investments in nanotechnology by the VC community, many companies are exploring alternative approaches to growth and value creation. Customer-based financing in the form of government contract R&D is a proven approach to technology development, yet this model has only been exploited by a few established nanotech players. In this article, CEO/President David Reisner cites his own companies as examples of how this approach may be exploited to its optimal advantage.
