Reviewing the NNP: Focus on Commercialization

Abstract:
In the aftermath of passage of the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act, policymakers and industry are hopeful that the National Nanotechnology Program will give rise to a tidal wave of new and useful technologies based on nanoscience. Notwithstanding this optimism, there are a number of questions and debates about how public funds should be spent. In this article, Jim Von Ehr reviews how the NNP is progressing, argues for an increased focus on public funding of commercialization activities, and explores ideas for how PCAST might work with the White House and Congress to ensure success of the NNP.
