The Coalescence of Nanotechnology with Systems Biology for Optimized Drug Delivery

Systems biology serves as a foundation for the study of the interaction of cellular systemic elements such as proteins and organelles, which govern processes such as mechano-sensation, differentiation, and the onset of disorders such inflammation and cancer. The acquired understanding—and subsequent control—of these systemic elements govern the ability of the nanoscale medicine community to develop multi-parametric modalities for efficient impact upon the treatment of the most pressing clinical issues. In this review, authors Robert Lam and Dean Ho examine the role of a spectrum of emerging nanomaterials and devices upon the landscape of drug delivery and subsequently how these technologies may be optimized, utilizing examples of recent work based upon systemic and localized drug elution. By pairing their innate advantages with emergent systems biology methodologies for search-driven drug optimization, the advent of nano-engineered drug elution with unprecedented efficacy may be realized.
