Will Nanotechnology Unlock the Secrets of Immortality?
February 21, 2008 – 10:47 amNanotechnology has certainly expanded the realm of scientific possibility, but immortality? A growing number of nano-enthusiasts have prophesied the imminent end of death. I am not among them. These kind of wild-eyed claims have cursed the commercial prospects of promising technologies. Skeptics have marshaled false promises like these to deflate public support and commercial momentum for much-needed technologies. Clean technology is the perennial loser in this regard. Who killed the electric car? Immortality killed it.
Technology needs to emphasize its upside to cross the chasm, but reckless promises often leave nefarious legacies that can curse the next generation of technology. I’d buy the Brooklyn bridge for a couple bucks off some street-wise huckster in lower Manhattan before I’d buy immortality. I hope it’s not too late to put the cuckoo back in clock on this immortality thing.
